
Tai no tenkan
"Tai no tenkan" is the contraction of two expressions: tai no henka on the one hand and irimi-tenkan on the other (tai no henka + irimi tenkan = tai no tenkan).

When he was teaching tai no henka, Morihiro Saito would use a little pedagogical trick to show that the movement had to be done without the slightest force.
Tai no henka is not a technique, and yet there is no Aikido technique in which this "movement" is not present...
It is not the irimi time that causes uke to loose balance, it is the tenkan time. This second time is therefore absolutely essential, as without it a step is missing.
The movement of Aikido (tai no henka) perfectly combines two requirements that are unrelated at first sight...
